Game Console Terminology
Those who have only recently started using games consoles could find the terminology which is commonly used a little bit confusing. When it comes to games consoles, the following are some of the more commonly used terms and phrases.
- Memory Card this is a needed to store data related to the game; such things as highest scores and where you finished the game last. It is not usual for a memory card to be supplied with the games console so if you want to be able to save your games, you will have to buy one.
- “Chipped” Consoles when a game console is chipped it means that it has been tampered with in order that it can play games from different platforms. The big game developers are always trying to find new ways to stop people chipping their game consoles.
- CD Rom – Nearly every games console will have a CD Rom with it. This is where you put the disk containing the game programme. The CD Rom will read the game disk data and then the game will play.
- Video Game Controller – this is the hand held device that you use to control the game; it is often connected to the game by a wire but not always. If you want other people to be able to play the game at the same time you will need to purchase more video game controllers.
- Dual Shock Controllers these are another type of video game controller that vibrates when you do certain actions in the game. The reason for these controllers is to provide a more fun, realistic way to play.
- Operating System This is the game consoles programmed code that tells it how to perform. There will be a different operating system used on different games consoles.
So when it comes to games consoles, the words above are just some of the ones that you may come across.
